Maximizing Storage in Your RV

Embarking on a road trip in your RV camper is an exciting adventure, but one annoying challenge is dealing with limited storage space. Fortunately, with a bit of creativity and some innovative storage solutions, you can make the most of every inch available. Let’s explore some practical and creative ways to optimize storage in your travel trailer.

  1. Vertical Space: When space is at a premium, think vertically. Install shelves or hanging organizers on the walls to store items like large kitchen utensils, pots/pans, spices, shoes, clothes, toiletries and tools. This will not only maximizes space but also keeps essentials within easy reach. Use folding doors, straps/bungee cords, or removable drapes to keep items secure when moving. Generally, the shelving shouldn’t be to deep, to prevent blocking a walkway. Some more creative campers even make drop down shelving attached to the ceiling that you pull on with a cord to access and increase storage.
  2. Foldable Furniture: Invest in foldable or collapsible furniture. Folding tables, chairs, beds, and pop up canopies can be easily stowed when not in use, creating more space for movement inside the RV. Look for compact and lightweight options that won’t take up unnecessary room during travel. However, don’t go cheap here. These items generally take a lot of wear and tear when camping, and being moved about frequently. Quality is key with these items.
  3.  Under-Bed Storage: Most travel trailers come with beds that can be lifted to reveal valuable storage space underneath, or they may have drawers already built in under the bed. This is perfect for bedding, pillows, or clothing. Consider using vacuum-sealed bags to minimize the surface area. Also, if the bed is raised, another option is investing in sturdy, long totes that can be stored underneath. The totes can come in handy while traveling and acquiring souvenirs in your campground adventures. Be sure you have them secured in place with other totes or items next to them.
  4.  Multi-Functional Furniture: Opt for furniture that serves multiple purposes. For example, choose a sofa that can be converted into a bed, or a dining table that has an inner storage area for the TV. There are also ottomans with hidden storage space, lift top end tables, and dining room benches with storage under the seats. This way, you get the functionality you need without sacrificing valuable space.
  5. Clever Kitchen Storage: In the kitchen, use stackable pull out baskets and nesting bowls to save space. Install magnetic strips on the walls to store knives and other metal utensils, keeping countertops clutter-free. Add an additional removable wire shelf inside a cupboard. Utilize the inside of cabinet doors for additional storage by adding hooks or racks. Try a small fruit/veggie hammock under a cabinet. Collapsible cups are a fun option, too. Socializing with other campers will give you many new solutions.
  6. Compact Wardrobe: When it comes to clothing, pack strategically. Choose versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched with multiple other items. Roll clothes instead of folding them to save space, and use collapsible hangers to maximize your wardrobe space. While most women want options for clothing, keeping it simple may be warranted when touring in your trailer.
  7. Outdoor Storage Solutions: Consider utilizing the exterior of your RV for storage. Install a cargo rack or use storage bins designed for the outside of your camper. This is an excellent way to keep outdoor gear, such as camping chairs, grills, or sports equipment, easily accessible without cluttering the interior. Consider installing heavy duty locks on all these to prevent theft.
  8. Labeling and Organization: While labeling doesn’t help with creating storage, it does help to maintain an organized RV. This is actually crucial for maximizing space. Label storage bins and containers to quickly locate items when needed. Use clear containers whenever possible to easily identify the contents without opening them. Making the most of storage space in your motorhome is a creative challenge that can greatly enhance your overall travel experience. Efficient storage undoubtedly contributes to a stress-free and comfortable adventure on the road. I hope these tips and ideas have helped to spur your own imaginative juices flowing to create space inside your camper haven.
